sulfate-free shampoo + giveaway!

March 30, 2010

sulfate-free shampooYou may be asking: What is a sulfate?

A salt of sulfuric acid. Sulfates are used in everything from toothpaste to engine de-greasers. Sulfates are a common ingredient in industrial strength topical cleaning agents!!! Yuck! I know!

Sfree shampoo is free of all those yucky sulfates then make your hair weak and brittle. Sulfates dry-out your hair by stripping it of its natural oils, leaving you will course, dry and vulnerable locks.

A long time ago, late at night I purchased WEN Cleansing Conditioner from an informercial, because it promised to cleanse my hair without those any harsh chemicals and detergents found in traditional shampoos.

I anxiously anticipated the arrival of my WEN products. I thought the shampoo was wonderful!!! After about 3 weeks my hair started to feel weighted-down, oily and full of product. I kept using it to see if it was just a little speed bump in what I thought was a great product…it wasn’t a speed bump.

My hair never got soft and silky again after the 3 weeks of using the WEN Cleansing Conditioner. {I did a review on this product a long time ago if you want to read that entry: https://geishapearl.wordpress.com/2009/08/07/product-review-wen-cleansing-conditioner/}

The moral of the little story above is that it is relatively hard to find a shampoo without sulfates and detergents that actually cleans your hair and KEEPS it feeling clean! Sfree is a huge except to this!!!

After my first use of the Sfree shampoo I was hooked, but as you can from my WEN story I needed to be sure. So I kept using the product. As week 3 approached was a little nervous the product would stop working. I had high hopes, because I loved the shampoo! Week 3 came and went and my hair still felt amazingly clean and very moisturized….week 4 came and went….week 5 came and went…week 6 came and went…and my hair still felt absolutely amazing!

Sfree shampoo never felt like it was weighing-down my hair! My hair had bounce and felt silky smooth. I have also noticed how strong my hair felt–I have little to no split-ends, which is usual for me because of all the heat styling I do to my hair!

…Oh and the smell! It’s a wonderful assortment of citrus smells like grapefruit and hints of lemon and orange. The smell is great because it’s truly a unisex-smell. It has a very refreshing and relaxing scent, perfect for a morning or evening shower!

My overall option of the products is I LOVE IT! I will definitely keep Sfree shampoo in my daily hair routine for a long time! I would strongly recommend this product to every hair type, texture, cut, color, length, and style!

natural remedy to a dry scalp

December 3, 2009

Winter’s here…I know, yuck! Every winter season my hair and scalp always get dry, so I headed to my local natural beauty shop to remedy my problem. Here’s what I learned:

Try a shampoo and/or conditioner with Tea Tree Oil in the ingredients

Tea Tree Oil for hair productsTea Tree? What’s that? Its an essential oil obtained by steam distillation of leaves of a Melaleuca alterifolia, a plant native to Austraila.

So why should I use it in my hair? Tea Tree Oil has a healing and soothing property that helps skin cuts, burns and infections.

Ok so really why should I put this in my hair? Tea Tree Oil contains consituents called terpenoids, which have been found to have antiseptic and antifungal activity. If you are someone who is struggling with a dry, itchy scalp, Tea Tree Oil is a natural product that can help to eliminate your scalp problem. Tea Tree Oil can significantly reduce the symptoms of dandruff, leaving you flake free and confident!

I picked up a shampoo with Tea Tree included, called Giovanni. Here’s a link to their website: http://www.giovannicosmetics.com/ I have only used the product once, but I’m hoping it will help my scalp without all the harmful and stripping chemicals found in everyday dandruff products.

I will keep you informed on my opinion of the product!

Have you used any dry scalp or dandruff products?? What did you think of them???

no more shampooing {update}

October 1, 2009

Its been a week since I vow not to shampoo my hair…scary, I know!

I have to confess I let my stylist shampoo my hair when I went into get my hair trimmed on Sunday. I just love the way my hair feels after they shampoo and condition it!

So besides that one time I actually have not shampooed my own hair…surprisingly, I love it! My hair really does feel soft and smooth. It is easy to style and silky smooth when I run my fingers through it.

So my shower routine is a dime size of Dove Moisturizing Conditioner into the roots of my hair. I really scrub my scalp and first 3 inches of my hair for about a minute or two. Rinse throughly! Then apply Bumble & Bumble Super Rich Conditioner (check out the review) to bottom half of my strands. I let the conditioner soak in while I scrub up and stuff, then rinse. Super simple and it will save a bunch of money on shampoos I usually buy.

I’m going to stay with it for awhile longer and let you guys know how it goes!

throw away your shampoo…

September 25, 2009

I found this article on Jack and Hill Blog today “I Have Not Washed My Hair in Two Months“…crazy/dirty…I know. But I kept reading, I had to know what the article was about.

Quick summary:

She has curly/frizzy/just plain unruly hair {sound familiar–I suffer from the same hair!} and she decided to go cold turkey and stop shampooing her mane after skimming through a book called Curly Girl waiting in the lobby of her hairdresser’s salon. Instead Curly Girl suggests using a small amount of conditioner and massaging it into your roots to release any dirt and build up. Then condition as usual…{what?!?–I thought the same thing}. She said after no time at all her hair was looking better then ever, easy to handle and compliments were rolling in.

I was sold. I’m starting today, giving up the shampoo! I’ll let you know if this no-shampoo thing really works.

If anyone has ever tried this before let me know how it went for you or if think its a crazy idea???

shampoo hair upside-down…

August 17, 2009

This is super great for girls with thick hair, like me. Sometimes I have a hard time really shampooing my hair without tangling it all up. Shampooing it upside-down cleans all your roots really well and doesn’t tangle up your hair into a mess!

no more brassy hair…

August 10, 2009
Your brassy hair weapon!

Your brassy hair weapon!

There is nothing worse !than your blond locks turning a tarnished brassy hue. Your hair looks frail and, well, cheap.

Here is a little trick I learned from InStyle Magazine. Combat your brassy hair by adding a tiny pinch of grape {purple} Kool-Aid into your shampoo bottle and shampoo like normal.

Be sure to only add a small pinch of powder to your shampoo…you don’t want to replace the brass with purple!

What’s your trick to maintain your hair color?
